RELOCATION

Moving to a foreign country can be a stressful time, here are a few tips that may help you along the way.

Visas

To enter North Cyprus a valid passport is required; a visa is stamped in your passport upon entry. This visa permits you to stay in the country for a period of up to 90 days. After which you must apply for residency see below for details of this procedure.

Work Permits

If you are not a holder of a Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus identity card you will need a work permit in order to work in North Cyprus.

The present policy regarding foreign nationals who wish to take up employment in North Cyprus is that an employment permit is granted only on a temporary basis and for a specified position provided that no suitably qualified TRNC citizens are available. Please note that this action must take place while foreign nationals are outside North Cyprus.

Any foreign national seeking employment in North Cyprus must secure through personal efforts a local employer who should submit an application to the Migration Officer, Ministry of Interior, Lefkosa (Nicosia), which is the competent authority for the issue of such permits. The Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance acts as an advisor to the Migration Officer as regards the situation in the labour market and the compliance by the above-mentioned employer of the criteria governing the employment of aliens.

Residency Permits

In order to become a resident you must undergo a full medical examination, as well as visiting the police station where they will check the number of visits to Northern Cyprus, and carry out a criminal record check. You must have sufficient funds in your bank account to demonstrate that you can live here with no support from the TRNC government.

Driving

You are permitted to drive a hire car on your UK driving licence for an unlimited period of time. In order to drive a Turkish Cypriot car you will need to obtain a Cypriot driving licence, this can only be obtained with either a work permit or residency.

Health

The health service in Northern Cyprus has a very good standard of treatment. Hospitals are situated in Lefkosa, Kyrenia and Famagusta. There are many doctor’s surgeries in these areas as well.

Dental treatment is also of a high standard with the latest technology used. Most dentists abide the Government scale of fees, but a scale of charges should be requested before treatment commences, however prices are generally ½ the cost of treatment in the UK.

Professional eye tests are available in all towns. Contact lenses are generally cheaper in the UK, however a wide range of designer, quality spectacles are a third of the price compared to the UK

There are several insurance companies who provide Health insurance. The British Residents Society are the best people to contact.

Education

The standard of the education system in Northern Cyprus has developed and improved over the last few years. There are several state schools and universities offering good quality education. The Near East University (NEU) www.neu.edu.tr and the GAU www.gau.edu.tr are the most popular, offering education from Nursery age to University graduation.

Business Opportunities

The TRNC is encouraging foreigners to live and work in North Cyprus - in particular, to invest in business opportunities particularly within the tourism sector. For more information please visit www.trncgov.com.

Pets

Pets may be brought into North Cyprus on the acquisition of an import permit from the North Cyprus Veterinary Services. Once you have the import permit this has to be signed by a vet in the country of origin and accompany the animal. The animal must be vaccinated against rabies two months prior to importation. They must then be kept under quarantine for one month. Home quarantine in a previously designated area where they can be inspected at intervals by the Veterinary Services Department is also possible. The following breeds cannot be brought into Cyprus: American Pit Bull or Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro.

Shipping Belongings

Generally North Cyprus government will allow one container load of personal, second hand goods with no importation taxes charged. However, if you have lived in Northern Cyprus for over 6 months full importation taxes will be charged on your personal goods and the 'free' load does not apply. Boray can recommend some reputable shipping agencies. Email us on info@borayestates.com

Car Importation

All foreigners should carefully examine the importation of vehicles rules into Northern Cyprus from overseas. Cars are valued (Glass's Guide) and import tax is levied on the basis of the value, engine capacity and age. In most cases the tax assessment is high and therefore it can be far more advantageous to purchase a car in North Cyprus. Brand new cars are usually very well priced and many companies offer interest free credit terms.

Second-hand vehicles are in abundance but prices vary depending on the condition and age of the vehicle. It is recommended to compare car prices with a number of dealerships.

Rentals

Long term lets are common in North Cyprus, with prices ranging from £200 for an apartment up to £450 per month for a villa with a private pool. Although Boray does not have a rental department we can recommend a number of reputable agencies who offer a wide selection of properties in a variety of locations.
